Comic Script Writing,  Comics

Often, when I receive a request for an explainer comic, the client will have a rough idea of what they want and send over a few paragraphs of a rough story idea. Once the idea is finalized, I can then turn it into a comic script if the client hasn’t already done so. I will read through the idea and break it down into the number of panels and pages I think will work for the story.

Below is is an example of a one page comic idea that I worked on for Joto-Vent System.

Client’s script notes:

Scene 1: At the installation site after completion of a new residential house

  • An architect tells John how much he is happy with the newly built house using the Joto-Vent System while looking at the house.
  • He continues to talk about 3 points he liked about Joto-Vent System; 1) clean look (no foundation vents), 2) ease of installation (because of no cutting holes in the foundation), and 3) technical support (availability of technical documents).

Scene 2: At the office of the architect

  • Going back to the time of designing the house using his PC at his desk, the architect is wondering how to specify the Joto-Vent System.
  • Then, John shows up and asks the architect how the drawing is going.
  • “Good timing” says the architect and asks John for the technical documents that he needs to specify the products.
  • John tells the architect that all the technical documents including the BIM data and CAD files are available on joto-vent.com.
  • The architect is happy that all the information he was looking for is right there on the webpage and continues to work on the drawing.

Scene 3: This doesn’t have to be a part of the comic strip. We only need a sentence like below and the 2 characters with the Joto-Vent products on their hands. “Joto-Vent System has all the experience, technical resource, products and the ICC certification for you to experience the next level of crawl space ventilation. Contact us today for any questions, technical support, sample requests or a Zoom CE/PK presentation.”

My Comic script re-write:

Scene 1

At the installation site after completion of a new residential house. A wide view of a newly constructed

home after the landscaping has been completed. We see nice shrubs and flowers planted around the

perimeter of the house. Two men are standing outside the house having a discussion.

Panel 1

Wide establishing shot of a new home. John and an architect are standing outside talking.

John: Hey Sam, what are your thoughts now the house is built?

Sam: I am so happy we decided to use the Joto-Vent System!

John: Great! What is it that you like most about it?

Panel 2

Sam pointing at the different aspects of the

Sam: Three things. One, I really like the clean look that it gives the exterior of the home.

Panel 3

Sam: Two, There are no foundation vents for pests to get into!

Panel 4:

Sam: Three, The technical support is amazing. All the documents I need are in one place!

Scene 2

At the office of the architect. We are in a room with drafting tables, filing cabinets and flat files spread

throughout. Architects are working on plans and discussing documents.

Panel 5:

John Walks into the room. Sam is working at his desk on a PC.

John: How is the drawing going?

Sam: Good timing, John. How in the world do I specify the Joto-Vent System? Do you know where I

can find the technical documents for this home?

Panel 6

John: All the technical documents including the BIM data and CAD files are available on joto-vent.com.

Panel 7

Sam: You’re kidding? All in one place? That’s easier than it used to be. Thanks!

Panel 8
